G8 Leaders Discuss Climate Change
Nuclear Energy Vital to Meeting Future Energy Demands

WASHINGTON, DC, June 6, 2007 – With climate change figuring high on this week’s G8 Summit agenda, the world’s leading nations have a prime opportunity to draw attention to the role that nuclear energy must play in meeting future energy demand around the world.

The central themes of this year’s summit are “growth and responsibility.” Nuclear energy goes to the heart of both themes – “growth,” in that nuclear energy is one of the few widely used energy sources today which we can count on tomorrow; “responsibility,” in that nuclear energy can help governments bolster their economies and meet electricity demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Nuclear energy produces no greenhouse gases during the production of electricity.

The Clean and Safe Energy, CASEnergy Coalition (http://www.cleansafeenergy.org) calls upon G8 leaders to ensure that nuclear energy plays a significant role in climate change discussions. CASEnergy co-chair, Dr. Patrick Moore (co-founder and former leader of Greenpeace) states why an expanded role for nuclear energy -- along with conservation, and renewables such as hydro, wind and geothermal energy -- should be part of any debate on global climate change solutions:

“The topic of climate change may be the most important discussion of our times because it impacts every one of us,” said Dr. Patrick Moore. “We all share the same planet. While we don’t have to implement national energy policies in the same way, we owe it to ourselves and to our citizens to find a way to protect the earth from potential environmental damage.”

“Nuclear energy can provide one important way to reduce carbon dioxide emissions,” said Moore. “Nuclear energy has among the lowest impacts on the environment of any energy source and does not produce gases such as nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide that threaten our atmosphere and cause ground-level ozone formation, smog and acid rain.”

About The CASEnergy Coalition:

The CASEnergy Coalition is a large grassroots coalition of over 1000 members that unites unlikely allies across the business, environmental, academic, consumer and labor community to support nuclear energy.  We believe that nuclear energy can improve energy security, ensure clean air quality, and enhance the quality of life and economic well-being of all Americans.
