CASEnergy Co-Chair Christine Todd Whitman Brings CASEnergy Message to Michigan

CASEnergy Co-Chair Christine Todd Whitman traveled to Michigan to address the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Future Forum Conference on September 18.  She spoke to approximately 300 guests including state legislators, business leaders and community members.  Whitman's message focused on the need to develop a comprehensive energy policy and the critical role nuclear energy can play to supply the country's and, specifically, Michigan's future energy demand.

“We are faced with an energy challenge that is serious and real. By the year 2030, Michigan’s overall electric demand is projected to increase by 16 percent. Coal and natural gas currently combine to supply 70 percent of Michigan’s electricity, while nuclear energy provides around 26 percent.  With only two decades remaining in which to tackle the problem, there is a major case to be made for nuclear energy to meet this demand while limiting environmental repercussions,” said Whitman.

The significant turnout at the events and thought-provoking questions from the community indicate that the citizens of Michigan are approaching our nation’s energy challenges with open minds and are willing to engage in thoughtful discussions about the role nuclear energy can play to meet our growing needs.

During her trip she was interviewed by the Lansing State Journal, the Dennis Miller Radio Show, Crain's Detroit Business, CNS News, Argus Air Daily, Platts Electricity Publications and WILS-AM.  Governor Whitman also met with State Senator Bruce Patterson, Chairman of the Energy Policy and Public Utilities Committee, and State Representative Craig DeRoche, the House Republican Leader. Both of these leaders agreed to join the CASEnergy Coalition.
