CASEnergy Applauds the President’s Support for the Expansion of Nuclear Energy
President Bush reiterates his support for nuclear energy during Browns Ferry Plant tour
In yet another sign that nuclear energy is a vital component of the energy debate, President Bush discussed the important role nuclear energy must play to address our nation’s growing energy needs, and reiterated his support for expanding the safe use of nuclear power during his visit to Browns Ferry power plant today. Browns Ferry Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1 is the first U.S. nuclear reactor to come online in the 21st century, and a welcome sign of the industry’s rebirth.
The CASEnergy Coalition recognizes this continued support as another step in nuclear power's overall acceptance as a necessary energy resource for our future. It currently powers 20% of all U.S. electricity generation. In the face of the ever-increasing demand for electricity - up 40% by 2030 - and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as part of global climate change solutions, nuclear energy is the one energy source that has the capacity to generate a base load amount of power, without generating harmful environmental by-products. A diverse mix of renewable energy sources, including nuclear power, is our best option to address both our future demand for electricity and hope for a clean environment. Nuclear energy is clean, affordable, and reliable, and subsequently must be part of any plan to meet our future electricity needs.
The CASEnergy Coalition is a large grassroots coalition of over 1000 members that unites unlikely allies across the business, environmental, academic, consumer and labor community to support nuclear energy. We believe that nuclear energy can improve energy security, ensure clean air quality, and enhance the quality of life and economic well-being of all Americans. The Coalition is led by Christine Todd Whitman, former Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency and former New Jersey Governor, and Patrick Moore, a co-founder and former leader of Greenpeace.
